This week, students will continue to recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures and determine their central message or lesson. The children will differentiate between what the character in the story learned and what the author wants to teach you. We will read Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears (An African Folktale), the Town Mouse and Country Mouse, and The Legend of the Blue bonnet. "TRC (book level testing) has started. Children have been tested on their fluency level (how fast and accurately they read). Once all students are tested, the scores will be shared with you.

Writing
This week the class will work on a non-fiction writing choice board. The choice board will provide opportunities for the students to review and practice non-fiction writing. Last week, the children wrote their own fairy tales and folktales. I will provide time for them to finish their stories before writing non-fiction.

Math
This week, students will use a number line to add and subtract one and two digit numbers. They represent the addition or subtraction as line segments with arrows above the number line. In these lessons, students will choose tools to help them add or subtract lengths and to find precise measurements. Then, I will introduce topic 14 (Data and Graphing). Most of the work in this cluster involves data collection and representations. Some questions can be answered by collecting and analyzing data. Data can be represented visually using tables, charts, and graphs. Students can generate dat using surveys.

Social Studies
Students will turn in their timelines on Wednesday. We will have a gallery walk where students can view each other's timelines. We will begin a new unit this week and students will understand government's services and their value to the community. They will also understand why it is important for citizens to participate in their community.
